Job Title: Director of Risk Management

A respected and community-focused public sector organization is seeking a collaborative and strategic Director of Risk Management to lead enterprise-wide risk initiatives and protect employees, assets, and operations. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing workers’ compensation, insurance programs, liability management, and workplace safety efforts.
Position Overview
The Director of Risk Management provides strategic direction and daily oversight of the organization’s risk management function. This role ensures effective claims administration, risk mitigation strategies, regulatory compliance, and insurance coverage optimization while fostering a safe and supportive work environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage all risk management programs, including workers’ compensation, liability, insurance, and safety initiatives
- Oversee workers’ compensation claims administration, including investigations, benefit determinations, reserving, and payments
- Supervise risk management staff and collaborate with employees, medical providers, legal counsel, and insurance partners
- Assess organizational risk exposures and secure appropriate insurance coverage in partnership with brokers and actuaries
- Develop and manage budgets related to self-insurance, liability, and claims programs
- Oversee auto and property claims, long-term disability administration, and applicable CMS reporting
- Coordinate safety training, injury prevention initiatives, and employee wellness programs
- Provide guidance and support to leadership on risk-related matters and policy development
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of workers’ compensation laws, insurance principles, and risk management practices
- Experience in claims management, risk analysis, and budget oversight
- Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships across departments and with external partners
- Excellent communication skills and sound independent judgment
- Bachelor’s degree in public administration, business administration, insurance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience
