As an Eddy County Detention Officer, you will ultimately maintain the immediate security, care, and control of inmates at the Eddy County Detention Center. You will supervise and monitor behavior of residents, and coordinate and cooperate with law enforcement agencies and judiciary agencies, as necessary. You will plan and perform a wide range of detention duties to ensure the proper booking, incarceration and safety of persons committed to the Detention Center, inspect facilities for cleanliness, clean and sanitize the facility, identify and report conditions or practices that may compromise overall sanitation effectiveness, maintain an inventory of sanitation supplies, maintain and inventory of all inmate supplies, stored clothing and distribution. You may transport prisoners to court and other appearances, and you must perform all duties with minimal supervision. As a Detention Officer, you may be assigned to duty stations in the Adult Male Unit or the Adult Female Unit. Keep in mind you may be required to work irregular hours, attend job-related meetings in and out of town, and perform other duties assigned. You will work 12 -hour shifts, three months’ graveyard and then three months’ days. Your schedule will consist of working Monday, Tuesday, off Wednesday and Thursday; then Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, off Monday and Tuesday; then work Wednesday and Thursday, off Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
To Qualify:
- High School Diploma or GED certificate required
- No experience necessary
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be a U.S. Citizen; eligibility to work in the U.S. will be verified thru E-Verify.
- Must successfully pass criminal and employment background investigations, written testing, and pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.
- Must have no illegal drug use or recreational use of marijuana in the last three (3) years. Eddy County is a drug free workplace.
- Must have no felony or domestic violence convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude.
- Must have (or obtain) a valid NM driver’s license with no DWI convictions or more than 2 moving violations in the past 3 years and be insurable by the County Insurance Authority. Must provide a current driving record.
- Must successfully pass the 160-hour Detention Officer Certification course and 40-hour Defensive Tactics course within one year of hire. Must be able to become certified in CPR/First Aid/AED within 1 year of hire. Must successfully pass Defensive Driving course within 6 months of hire.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with others in writing and verbally. An individual must have the ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language
