Position Overview

Recourse Communications is proud to partner with the South Dakota Department of Corrections to identify dedicated professionals ready to begin a career in corrections and public safety.

As a Correctional Officer, you will work a rotating 12-hour schedule:

2 days on / 2 days off / 3 days on / 2 days off / 2 days on / 3 days off

In this role, you will help maintain a safe and secure correctional environment by supervising inmates, enforcing institutional policies, and responding professionally to a variety of situations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain safety, security, and order throughout the facility
  • Supervise inmate activities, work assignments, and recreation
  • Conduct inmate counts and security checks
  • Search inmates, living quarters, visitors, and common areas for contraband
  • Monitor gates, cell doors, and inmate movement
  • Maintain accountability for keys, radios, tools, restraints, and security equipment
  • Respond to emergencies including fights, behavioral incidents, and medical situations
  • Assist with specialty assignments that support institutional operations and security


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Valid driver’s license required
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or provide proof of permanent U.S. residency
  • Must successfully complete an online Correctional Officer suitability assessment
  • Must pass a background investigation and drug screening
  • Candidates should demonstrate integrity, professionalism, confidence, motivation, and sound judgment
