As a Cargo Screening K9 Handler, you will deploy as a professional canine team to detect explosives, firearms, and other hazardous materials within cargo and controlled aviation environments. When your K9 alerts, operations stop—and your judgment determines what happens next.
This role is a lifestyle, not a shift you clock out of. Your K9 partner goes home with you. Your responsibility doesn’t end when the workday does. This responsibility is supported through designated K9 stipends and home care pay.
Cargo Screening K9 Handlers operate in airport cargo environments, screening pallets, freight, facilities, and controlled areas using certified detection canines.
You should expect:
- Long periods of routine, methodical work
- Strict adherence to TSA, regulatory, and GK9 procedures
- Rotating schedules supporting 24/7/365 operations
- Rare but high-consequence moments where precision matters
This is not high-adrenaline work.
It is high-trust work.
Your K9 PartnerYour dog is not a perk.
Your dog is a professional partner—and a responsibility.
- Daily care, feeding, and conditioning
- Ongoing training and operational readiness
- Housing the dog at home
- Maintaining professional standards on and off shift
If you are not prepared to structure your life around this responsibility, this role will not be a fit.
- A service-oriented mindset
- Comfort with structure, accountability, and standards
- Discipline to perform repetitive work without cutting corners
- Maturity to make decisions without direct supervision
- Respect for the responsibility of working with a professional K9 partner
Backgrounds that often align well include veterans, former law enforcement, team-sport athletes, hunters, and individuals accustomed to responsibility-driven environments. Prior K9 experience is not required for all candidates.
GK9 provides industry-recognized training through our academy in Opelika, Alabama.
